Why visit a hand surgeon?

The hand is a unique area of the body composed of an intricate arrangement of underlying structures including bone, joints, ligaments, tendons, nerves, blood vessels, muscles, and skin. For the hand to function well, these components must be preserved in their normal delicate relationship with each other. A disease or injury can affect one or more structures and impair the use of the hand.

A hand surgeon receives additional training and certification to diagnose and treat all problems related to these structures in the hand, wrist, and elbow. Although a hand surgeon specializes in the technical skills needed to surgically address these areas, not all problems seen by a hand surgeon need surgery. Often a hand surgeon recommends non-operative treatments such as medications, splints, injections, and hand therapy.
