Tidewater Ortho is extremely proud to welcome the newest member of our Specialists Group, Dr. Melissa Erickson – the Peninsula’s first female spine surgeon – and the expansion of our service lines to include comprehensive surgical care for all orthopaedic conditions of the spine.

An Illinois native, Dr. Erickson graduated magna cum laude from Trinity International University in Deerfield, and received her medical education at Chicago’s Rush University before completing her residency at Duke University’s Orthopaedic Surgery Program in Durham. She then did a Fellowship in Spine Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

Dr. Erickson brings state of the art technique and the most current thinking to our spine patients. She’s particularly excited about the newer, very specific motion-preserving surgeries:
• Arthroplasty
• Laminoplasty
• Direct lateral interbody fusions
• Microdiscectomy, or microdecompression spine surgery

“For the right patients, these procedures can preserve motion,” Dr. Erickson says, “so they can do the things they like to do that they thought were lost to them. It’s gratifying to be able to offer them these options, so that they don’t have to sacrifice motion to be free of pain.”
